Michael Gaffney Day
Michael Gaffney Day Celebration to be held Saturday, September 26.
The City of Gaffney's annual Michael Gaffney Day celebration, honoring the city's founding father, Michael Gaffney, will be held on Saturday, September 26 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The event will be held at the Michael Gaffney Log Home on North Limestone Street in Historic Downtown Gaffney.
In the week prior to the event, Irish and American flags, along with a wreath representing the colors of Ireland, will be placed at Michael Gaffney's gravesite in the Michael Gaffney Cemetery, located at the intersection of Floyd Baker Blvd. and Logan Street.
During this year's event, there will be free, live music featuring Jeff Gates, with special guests Joel Turner and Bernie Swayngim. Prior to and between the performance sets, there will be performances by dancers from Gaffney's Southern Dance Academy. There will also be old-fashioned games including checkers, hopscotch, and an egg-relay. Wagon rides, going to and from the event and Gaffney's Old Field, will be hosted and sponsored by the Cherokee County History & Arts Museum.
Food at the event will be provided by local nonprofits. These nonprofits, all within Cherokee County, will be selling food at the event to raise money for their respective organizations. Communities in Schools and Gaffney Little Theatre will be selling hot dogs and hamburgers. American Red Cross and CAVA will be selling baked goods. Senior Centers of Cherokee County and PeachCenter Ministries will be selling snack foods. Hospice Care of South Carolina will be selling drinks.
Following the Michael Gaffney Day celebration, the Cherokee County History & Arts Museum will be holding a special exhibit about Gaffney's schools.
