Burris, team will grow from game
A Greenville lineman brings down Gaffney quarterback De-Edward Burris. DeEdward Burris made up for a sluggish start with an assertive finish.
Burris threw three early interceptions, but led the Indians on four second-half scoring drives to beat Greenville, 39-35, Friday at Sirrine Stadium.
Burris struggled in the first half, completing only 5 of his 14 passes for 69 yards. He also was picked off twice.
But he more than made up for it with a brilliant second half performance, throwing for 210 yards and three touchdowns, including the gamewinner with just :31 left to play.
"My teammates kept me in the game," Burris said.
It also helped that his wide receivers made some big catches. Khris Brown had three TD catches, but the most memorable was a diving 47- yarder in the end zone.
"That was the best catch I've seen," Burris said. "I thought the ball was overthrown."
Brown and Burris hooked up again to give the Indians a short-lived lead with 2:12 left in the fourth quarter. On the play, a scrambling Burris bought enough time to find Brown alone in the end zone.
"It was a busted play," Burris said. "The line got me some time, so I could get around the corner and (Brown) appeared out of nowhere."
After Greenville drove for a touchdown to regain the lead, Burris answered with big play after big play on the gamedeciding touchdown on a jumpball pass to 6-foot-3 Quinshad Davis.
"That's something that we worked on all week and it paid off," Burris said.
The Red Raider defense made a concerted effort to keep him from getting outside of the pocket. In the second half, he made the adjustment to step up in the pocket to find his receivers.
Burris said he'll grow from the game.
"I know that I can do it now," he said. "If we get down again, we know we can come back."
