O-Line finds groove with new players
Photo byLARRY HILLIARD Gaffney wide receiver Joe Craig (3) will play Friday against Union County after injuring his Achilles heel in the second-half against Greenville this past Friday. Craig didn't return after the injury. There's been an offensive line sighting.
The Gaffney offensive line, which struggled with missed assignments against Dorman in the opener, made its presence felt in the team's come-from-behind win over Greenville this past Friday.
Just like the Indians, the offensive line got better as the game went on. In the first half, Greenville sacked Gaffney quarterback DeEdward Burris four times and the Indians gained only 104 total yards.
After halftime, the Indians piled up nearly 400 yards of total offense and scored four touchdowns and a field goal.
And the offensive line was a huge part of that, according to Gaffney coach Phil Strickland.
"They got better as the game went on," Strickland said. "They figured out what to do."
The line had some new faces. Junior Clay McKowen got the start at tackle, while sophomore Josh Mata moved into the starting lineup at center, replacing Garrett Taylor, who moved to guard.
Strickland said the move took the pressure off Taylor, who had been struggling with his shotgun snaps to the quarterback.
Burris also rebounded from a slow start to throw four second-half touchdowns after throwing three early interceptions.
Strickland said Burris started hitting his receivers with regularity when he stayed in the pocket and didn't move up quite so far toward the line of scrimmage,
"We just want him to inch forward," he said.
In the first half, Burris completed only 5 of his 14 passes for 69 yards. In the second half, Burris was on fire, hitting on 14 of his 19 throws for 210 yards.
Running back Rodney Rogers also had a major impact for the Indians. Rogers gained 35 yards on eight carries, but it was his receiving where he really moved the sticks, with three receptions for 79 yards.
Strickland said Rogers probably has the best hands on the team. He's also difficult to tackle, Strickland said.
Defensively, the Indians gave up some big plays but Strickland said he sees improvement.
"We made some mistakes," he said. "Obviously, we don't have a lot of experience but they are getting better. They are getting better and that's what you want to see as a coach."
Notes... Wide receiver Joe Craig who left the Greenville game in the third quarter with an Achilles tendon injury practiced with the team on Monday and should be fine for Friday's game against Union County.
