Bessie H. Corry
Bessie Elizabeth Cordelia Hemphill Corry, 100, formerly of 311 Peachtree St., passed away Monday , Sept. 7, 2009, at 11:20 p.m. at Peachtree Centre.
Daughter of the late Chesterfield Hemphill and the late Lillian Richards Hemphill, she was the widow of Nathaniel Corry and was born Jan. 15, 1909, in Union County. She was a member of Limestone Missionary Baptist
Church ,where she was Mother of the Church, a former president of the Jubilee Choir and member of the Mass Choir, Missionary Society and many other organizations.
She is survived by two daughters, Ruby C. Sanders (Dr. J.W. Sanders Sr.) and Rosa Mae Ellis, all of Gaffney; a step-daughter, Jessie Adams of Alexandria, Va.; a brother, Victor C. Hemphill (Gwendolyn) of Gaffney; a sister, Rena Mae Windam of Bennettsville; six grandchildren, Frederick Ellis (Phyllis), Marva Davis (William), Jewette S. Patterson (Roger Sr.), all of Gaffney, Gytanna Smith (Bishop Keith C. Smith) of Spartanburg, Dr. James W. Sanders Jr. of Duncan and Ruzlin S. Smith (Leroy Sr.) of Gaffney; three step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; other sister-in-law, Sadie Hemphill of Gaffney; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The family is at the home of her daughter, Rosa Mae Ellis, 104 Poplar Springs Drive.
