Gaffney administrator divvies up money for paving
Guess who had the most difficult job this summer?
No, not President Barack Obama trying to push through national health care. It's Gaffney Administrator James Taylor.
Taylor was instructed to devise a roadpaving plan that would please six diverse council members. The task was so arduous because Taylor had to allot each council district $50,000 in road paving project funds over the next two years despite the wide disparity in costs associated with each road project. Taylor also needed to make sure his final list complied with Department of Transportation guidelines that requires 25 percent of the money be spent on state roads.
The city receives $150,000 in C-Funds each year, but typically elects to add those funds to the next year's appropriation to give each council member enough money to complete larger road projects.
Taylor unveiled his plan at Monday's meeting, which council members approved unanimously. The road paving projects are expected to begin in two weeks. They include:
District 1 (Wayne Ramsey)
Scheduled for completion in 2009 - Carlisle Street from Cherokee Avenue to North Limestone Street, from North Limestone Street to West Granard Street and from West Granard Street to North
Logan Street
Scheduled for completion in 2010 - Chatham Street from Beech Street to Osment Street
District 2 (Tom Reid)
The bulk of the project will be done this year - Pleasant Meadows from Floyd Baker Boulevard to Wilcox Avenue
District 3 (Bernard Smith)
Scheduled for completion in 2009 - Hetty Hill Street to Colonial Avenue
District 4 (Dennis Ramsey)
Scheduled for completion in 2010 - Browning Road to Huntington Drive
Scheduled for completion in 2009 - Saxon Drive from Brittany Road to Chaucer Drive
District 5 (Boone Peeler)
Scheduled for completion in 2009 - Robinhood Drive from Nott Street to Thompson Street; Spring Street from O'Neal to Nott
Scheduled for completion in 2010 - Brookside Drive to Sherwood Drive
