Soaring Eagles a tough foe for 1-2 Wildcats

Blacksburg coach Mickey Moss describes the No. 9-ranked Chesnee Eagles as simply a "good football team."

Who would argue?

The Eagles are 2-0 after beating Chase and Landrum last week, 27-10.

In the Landrum game, Chesnee led by a field goal at halftime but came to life behind quarterback Walt Miller, who threw three second-half touchdowns.

Miller replaced starter DaJohn Rowland, who caught one of the touchdown

passes. They were a combined 5 of 6 for 51 yards and two touchdowns in the second half last week.

Both Miller and

Rowland will likely see action at quarterback against the Wildcats.

"Both of their quarterbacks are good athletes," Moss said.

Chesnee coach Brent Bridges said both quarterbacks bring diverse skills to the position.

"Walt does some things better than DaJohn and DaJohn does some things better than Walt."

There is no confusion on who the Eagles top rushing threat is.

Senior Josh Jones rushed for 610 yards a year ago and gained 89 yards on just 10 carries last week.

"He's probably one of the best players we've seen," the Blacksburg coach said.

Raheem Hughes and Jalen Martin are a pair of talented receivers for Chesnee.

Combining size, athleticism and speed, the Eagles are a handful on defense, too, according to Moss.

"They will put a lot of pressure on you," he said. "They come after you."

Marcus Ovalle, who weighs 295 pounds, and Cam Moore anchor the defensive line.

Moss said what worries him the most is the Eagles' overall team speed, something that Blacksburg, historically, has trouble handling.

"We just have to keep them from getting to the outside," he said.

Blacksburg (1-2) is coming off a mistake filled loss to Indian Land. The mistakes came early as Indian Land took advantage of Blacksburg turnovers and poor tackling for a 35-0 halftime lead.

The Wildcats showed signs of life in the second half, scoring three straight touchdowns to pull within 35-20 with 10 minutes left to play.

Blacksburg had a chance to pull even closer but Indian Land forced an interception to end the threat.

Moss said the team must carry over the focus and intensity it displayed in the second half last week to today's game.

"It's something we can build on," he said.

The Wildcats also are battling the injury bug with so many players forced to play on offense and defense because of the team's small roster size.

"We are banged up," he said.

Last week, Joseph Upchuch started at quarterback but moved to safety after a couple of series. His replacement, freshman Treyvon Parker was 6 of 15 for 93 yards.

Moss said both players will see time under center at practice.

"We'll just see how things shake out," the Blacksburg coach said.
