Indian defense grows up
Gaffney defensive players hustle after a fumble by Union County on Friday . With DeEdward Burris running the offense, it might be easy to overlook Gaffney's unheralded defense.
Not Friday.
The Indians stuffed Union County, limiting the Yellow Jackets to a meager 173 total yards of offense in posting their first shutout.
"I'm real pleased especially because of it was our first look at the Wing-T," Gaffney defensive coordinator Dan Jones said. "We just stayed in our lanes and everybody had their responsibility."
The Indians focused on stopping talented Yellow Jacket back Michael Mebane, who gained 115 yards on 26 carries.
Jones praised the play and intangibles of linebacker Chris Adams.
"He played well but he showed a leadership role," he said.
Jones also said he was encouraged by the improved play of his young defensive line, which features sophomore Edward Bigby and freshman Jaylen Miller as well as Bo Tate.
Defensive lineman Dion Manning also had a big game, Jones said.
"They are all getting better and cutting down on their mistakes."
