Beattie tourney Friday, Oct. 16
The Beattie family will mark the 10th annual memorial golf tournament with special prizes and desserts on the golf course.
The family annually organizes a golf tournament to raise money for the Bradford Thomas Beattie Memorial Scholarship Fund. This year's event will be held Friday, Oct. 16 at Cherokee National Golf Club.
The family uses proceeds from the tournament to support a scholarship fund established in memory of Brad Beattie, a former Gaffney High football player who was killed in a car accident in 2000.
A $5,000 scholarship is awarded by the family each year to a Gaffney High student-athlete.
The scholarship is one of several ways the family gives back to the community in memory of Brad Beattie. The family donated $50,000 in equipment in 2004 to open a state-of-the-art weight room at Gaffney High School in Brad's memory.
"We are very thankful to everyone in the community who has supported the golf tournament. Every year is special to us," said Brian Beattie, Brad's older brother and one of the tournament organizers. "This is the 10th annual tournament so we wanted to do something special. We have decided to hold a raffle where people will have a chance to win one of 10 prizes. Each prize is valued at $200 and will involve something Brad really enjoyed like fishing or playing golf."
The raffle tickets will be sold for $1 and will be available at the golf tournament. In addition, homemade desserts will be provided on the golf course.
Golfers in the tournament can win $5,000 in cash for a hole in one on hole numbers 2, 5, 14 and 17. Pros are not eligible for the hole in one, putting or shootout prizes.
The golf tournament will begin with a captain's meeting at noon. The shotgun start will be at 12:30 p.m. A meal will be served after the tournament.
The entry fee is $300 per team. Entry forms are due by Oct. 8 and can be mailed to: P.O. Box 2267, Gaffney, S.C. 29342- 2267.
