A total of seven candidates are running in the special election for the District 7 Cherokee County Council seat.

The Democrat candidates are Clay Greer, Thomas Moss and William Wilson, said Suzanne Turner, executive director of the Cherokee County Election Commission.

The field of Republican contenders includes Tracy McDaniel, Donnie Smith, Dennis Stroupe and Brad Upchurch.

The deadline to enter the race expired at noon Monday.

The special election became necessary following the death of James Batchler, who held the post for 11 terms.

The primaries will be held Nov. 10, any runoffs will take place Nov. 29 and the general election is scheduled for Dec. 29.
