Shady Grove Church hosts ‘Baptist Week’
Shady Grove Baptist Church will host the 132nd annual session of the Thickety Mountain Missionary Baptist Association, Sept. 26-Oct. 1.
The theme for Baptist Week is "Embracing Diversity Through Communication, Transformation and Education." The Rev. Tony Macomson, pastor of Suck Creek Baptist Church, is Moderator of the association.
Events will begin Saturday with the 40th anniversary session and celebration of the Thickety Mountain Young Women’s Auxiliary (YWA) at Concord Baptist Church. The session and banquet will begin at 4 p.m. YWA contestants should report their contributions at 3 p.m. Past presidents will be recognized and a 2009-2010 Ms. YWA will be crowned. The Rev. Lee Byers Jr., host pastor of Shady Grove Baptist Church, will deliver the sermon. Their theme is "Serving Through Love." Shanese Dawkins is president of the auxiliary.
On Sunday, the Thickety Mountain Baptist Association Parent Body will convene at Shady Grove. The enrollment of churches will begin at 3:30 p.m. and devotion will begin at 4 p.m. with Piney Grove and Shady Grove delegates in charge. The Rev. Tony Macomson, Moderator; Dr. C. Dennis Rector, 1st Vice-Moderator and pastor of Piney Grove Baptist Church of Cowpens; and 2nd Vice-Moderator, Dr. Michael Bridges, pastor of Concord Baptist Church, will preside. At 6 p.m., dinner will be served and Dr. Rector will preach the introductory sermon at 7 p.m. Rev. Macomson will deliver the Moderator’s address.
The Ushers and Brotherhood auxiliaries will have their annual session Monday.
Enrollment of churches will begin at 5:30 p.m. and devotion will begin at 6 p.m. with Mt. Zion, Ebenezer and Bethel churches in charge. Inez McCluney is president of the Usher Auxiliary and Charles Montgomery is president of the Brotherhood Auxiliary. Dr. Michael Bridges, pastor of Concord Baptist Church, will deliver the sermon at 7 p.m.
The Thickety Mountain Junior Missionaries will have their program Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church beginning at 6:30 p.m. Ruby Sanders, Junior Supervisor, along with Junior president, Cheynia Allen, will call the session to order. Their theme is "Youth Strengthening Their Relationship With God Through Faith and Courage." The Youth Convention Choir, directed by Patricia Allen, will sing and the youths will present a drama.
The 90th annual session of the Women’s Missionary and Educational Convention will meet Wednesday at Shady Grove Church with Dr. Bertha T. Harris, 1st Vice-President, presiding. The convention will be called into session at 4 p.m. Minister Cathy Neal, chairperson of the Spiritual Life Committee, will give the inspirational message. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., Tecora Watts, 2nd Vice-President, will preside. President Daisy Smith will deliver her address and the final missionary sermon will be delivered by Dr. Antonio Smith, pastor of Gowdeysville Baptist Church.
The 102nd Congress of Christian Education of the Thickety Mountain Baptist Association will conclude the week on Thursday. The Congress’s theme is "Biblically Equipping the 21st Century Christian Church in Ministry and Witness."
The opening session will begin at 5 p.m. with the processional, posting of flags, Congress hymn and welcome The Rev. Kerwin Wray, Vice-President, will call for scripture, prayer and litany.
Dr. James Sanders Jr. will conduct the church school workshop. Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m.
At 7 p.m., the Rev. Michael Golden, 2nd Vice-President and pastor of Limestone Baptist Church, will preside over the "President’s Hour." The Rev. Danny Burnside, President and pastor of Philadelphia Baptist Church, will deliver the address.
