Swine flu infiltrates state prison system

While they’ve been able to keep it confined to a single prison, the state Department of Corrections (DOC) confirmed this week that it has seen its first flareup of the swine flu.

According to the DOC, 32 inmates housed at the Allendale Correctional Institution reported flulike symptoms between Sept. 14 and Sept. 22 and subsequent tests positively confirmed that one person tested positive for H1N1, also known as the swine flu, and two tested “probable” for the fast-spreading flu strain. It was likely, officials said, that all 32 inmates had the same flu strain.

The DOC said it took immediate steps to quarantine the inmates and stop the spread through medical treatment and cleaning. No employees of the DOC have contracted the flu so far.

DOC spokesman Josh Gelinas said visitation at the institution has been canceled for this weekend while inmate transfers to and from the facility have temporarily been suspended.

Gelinas said the DOC has requested H1N1 vaccines from the state Department of Environmental Health and Control.
