Woodruff overcomes lightning and Wildcats
Blacksburg running back Lennal Dasher finds the going tough against Woodruff on Friday night.
Woodruff football players waited out a 90 minute lightning delay Friday night before unleashing their own storm in a 42-0 victory over Blacksburg.
Woodruff running back Shun Tribble got loose for a 54-yard touchdown run on the game’s first possession. Quarterback Jake Lambert threw a 48- yard touchdown pass to wide receiver B.J. Johnson for a 14-0 first quarter lead.
Blacksburg hung tough with Woodruff in the first half behind a grinding ball control offense. Ninth grade quarterback Treyvon Parker guided the Wildcats run-oriented offense all the way to the 13-yard line before the second quarter drive ended with an incomplete pass on fourth down.
Running back Lennal Dasher was the workhorse for the Blacksburg offense, gaining 75 yards on 25 carries. Parker had two third down completions to keep a pair of drives alive in the first half.
Woodruff led 14-0 when its offense took over possession at the 24-yard line with 56 seconds left in the first half. Lambert threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Amos Moates with 28 seconds left to give Woodruff a 21-0 halftime lead.
Lambert finished 11-for-16 for 202 yards and three touchdowns. He had a 26-yard touchdown pass to Moates and scored on a 6-yard run before exiting the game with a 35-0 lead with 3:32 left in the third quarter. Woodruff scored in the fourth quarter on a 27-yard run by Tribble.
Woodruff held Blacksburg without a first down in the second half. Blacksburg finished the game without any turnovers.
Blacksburg linebacker Josh Batten intercepted Woodruff quarterback Ryan Perkins in the fourth quarter. Blacksburg had a fumble recovery on a Woodruff kickoff nullified by an illegal procedure penalty.
Despite the final score, Blacksburg coach Mickey Moss said he was proud of his team’s effort against Woodruff.
“Our kids played about as hard as they could play tonight,” Moss said. “I was very proud of their effort, and playing a great team like Woodruff is not going to do anything but help us the rest of the way.”
