A 46-year-old Poplar Springs Drive man was hit with an assault and battery charge after he allegedly hung a young boy by his shirt from a fence post as a joke.
According to the Gaffney Police Department, the incident occurred at about 2:45 p.m. Sept. 26 when a 6- year-old boy and his sister were walking down Poplar Springs Drive. A resident of the street, Vernon Leverett, allegedly came out to meet the two children and placed the young boy on a fence post, where he hung in the air by the back of his shirt over the post.
The young boy’s sister helped him get down when Leverett allegedly went to get a camera.
Police said in a report that the back of the young boy’s shirt had wrinkles and a mark from the fence post and that the boy was scared. Police said Leverett told them he was just playing and meant no harm to the young boy.
Leverett was arrested and ticketed for assault and battery, police reported.
The Gaffney Police Department reported a case of malicious damage on East Birnie Street.
According to a police report, someone smashed the back window out of vehicle parked in the 100 block between 11 p.m. Sept. 24 and 2:30 a.m. Sept. 25.
The damage is estimated at $250.
l Four tires were slashed on a vehicle parked on Courthouse Alley.
According to the Gaffney Police Department, someone flattened all four tires on a 2000 GMC Yukon parked in the 100 block between 10 p.m. Sept. 25 and 4 a.m. Sept. 26.
Damage is estimated at $500.
The Gaffney Police Department reported about $1,500 in vandalism damage to three vehicles parked in the 300 block of Hickory Street.
Some time between 11:30 p.m. Sept. 25 and 2:30 a.m. Sept. 26, someone spray-painted the side and hood of a 1991 Ford, “egged” and broke the headlight of another 1991 Ford and spray painted a 1986 Chevrolet, police said.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office reported the theft of a vehicle from Kings Creek Drive.
According to a police report, someone took a burgundy 1991 Chevrolet Lumina from the 500 block between Sept. 25 and Sept. 27.
The vehicle had no license plate. It is valued at $500.
A Goucher School Road homeowner’s screen door was damaged by a BB gun.
According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, someone targeted the home in the 400 block between 6 p.m. Sept. 26 and 5 p.m. Sept. 27.
Damage is estimated at $50.
