Rice racks up the stats

Gaffney’s Sidney Rice had four receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown in the Minnesota Vikings’ dramatic win over San Francisco on Sunday. For the season, Rice has nine catches for 102 yards and a touchdown.

Gaffney’s Rocky McIntosh piled up seven tackles in Washington’s loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday. McIntosh has 18 tackles this season.

Gaffney’s Gallman shoots 70

Gaffney’s Josh Gallman opened with a first round 2- under-par 70 to pace the USC Upstate men’s golf team in the Giustina Memorial Classic hosted by Oregon State at Trysting Tree Golf Club Monday afternoon.

Due to the time difference between Spartanburg and Oregon, the results of the second round were not known at the time of this release.

Gallman opened the tournament with a 70 against a challenging 7,030-yard course. He finished the first round tied for eighth place individually. He has claimed two straight top 10 finishes to open the season, winning the Rutgers Invitational by six strokes and finishing tied for ninth at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate.

Washington State opened the tournament with an 11-under-par 277 to take the lead. Oregon shot a 280 to stand second heading into the second round and was followed by Oregon State (282), Nevada (283), Cal Poly (285), Boise State (291), Upstate (294), Portland (294), Wyoming (294) and Hawaii (301).

LC golfers in seventh place

The Limestone College men’s golf team fired a 301 in the opening round of the Tusculum Fall Classic on Monday to finish the day in seventh place.

The tournament is being played at the par-71, 6,763-yard Links Hill Country Club. Limestone’s Brad Williams (Elgin, S.C.) and Billy Baker (Simpsonville, S.C.) are in the top 10 of the 67-golfer field.

Williams is currently tied for sixth with a one-over par score of 72. Billy Baker fired a 73 and is tied for eighth. Drew Sloan (Inman, S.C.) is 21st after scoring a 75. Ryan Cisler (Spartanburg, S.C.) carded an 81 for 55th place, and Ben Ross (West Columbia, S.C.) shot 82 for 59th place. Daniel Baker (Simpsonville, S.C.), who is competing as an independent, is 61st with a score of 82.

Tusculum College leads the 12-team field with a score of 293. Lincoln Memorial is second (294), followed by Catawba (295). Wingate University and Newberry are tied for fourth with 296.

Softball league tryouts Oct. 4

The Girls 10-and-under fast pitch softball league will hold tryouts on Sunday, Oct. 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Wayne Fuller Ford at the Midway Complex. For more information, contact Shane Wallace at 488-3051.
