Cop resigns amid SLED probe
A 10-year veteran of the Gaffney Police Department tendered his resignation on Thursday amidst a SLED investigation into an allegation that he provided alcohol to a minor.
On Sept. 27, an area woman filed a complaint with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office that Patrick Phillips, who until Thursday was a Gaffney Police Department officer, had provided an 18- year-old female with alcohol on Sept. 26 at about 10 p.m. at 3206 Cherokee Ave.
The address is the location of the Cherokee Technology Center.
According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office report, the woman who filed the complaint claimed Phillips knew the girl was underage.
Gaffney Police Chief Rick Turner said the report had been forwarded to the Gaffney Police Department on Sept. 27.
“We did immediately start conducting an internal review investigation, just to see if there was any substance to the allegation,” Turner said. “During the process, we did make the determination that it was worth looking into so I contacted the State Law Enforcement Division and requested their assistance with investigating the incident.”
SLED spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons could not confirm the subject but could confirm the Gaffney Police Department asked SLED to investigate an officer and that the investigation was active.
Phillips initially was placed on unpaid suspension. He resigned Thursday, Turner confirmed.
City Administrator James Taylor couldn’t comment on personnel matters but was able to confirm that Phillips began working for the city in August 1999.
Phillips could not be reached for immediate comment Thursday afternoon.
