Oct. 7 the anniversary of a historic battle that helped win the Revolutionary War

Dear Editor:

Oct. 7 is the anniversary of the 1780 battle of Kings Mountain, S.C., which was an overwhelming blow struck by American patriots against British Loyalist forces in the Southern campaign of the American Revolution.

This surprising action halted the triumphant northward movement of Lord Cornwallis, British commander in the South. The southern Appalachian frontiersmen brought unexpected defeat of Major Patrick Ferguson at Kings Mountain.

After this battle, the renewed patriot resistance led eventually to the American victory at Yorktown, Va., a year later in October 1781.

Let us remember the sacrifices of these American frontier fighters and patriots on Oct. 7 and attend the planned celebration at Kings Mountain National Military Park near Blacksburg.
Sincerely,
Russell S. “Rusty” Davis Jr.
