A South Carolina Department of Corrections prison inmate serving a sentence out of Cherokee County walked away from a work release job on Wednesday and now is considered a fugitive.

According to the state Department of Corrections, Nikita Brannon, 31, who was assigned to the minimum security Goodman Correctional Institution in Richland County, walked away from a job site in Lexington County at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and has not been seen since.

According to DOC records, Brannon was serving a sentence of seven years and 11 months out of Cherokee County for crack distribution within proximity of a school. The DOC listed the start of her sentence as July 2004.

While the discrepancy could not be immediately explained, Cherokee County court records listed no 2004 court actions involving Brannon.

Instead, the local court records showed only a 2001 court action in which a Nikita Brannon, with the same date of birth, received a 10-year sentence in Cherokee County Court on a drug offense.

Brannon was projected to be released in January 2010, according to the DOC.

Brannon is described as 5-feet, 2- inches tall, and weighs about 150 pounds.

She has a scar on the inside of her left arm, a scar on her stomach and a burn scar on her left arm.

Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call the Fugitive Apprehension Unit at (877) 349-2130 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., or (803) 896-2258 after 5 p.m., or their local police department.
