Wildcats hope to hold off potent Cavaliers
Blacksburg coach Mickey Moss unabashedly says that today’s opponent, Christ Church, has no weaknesses.
Just coachspeak or does the Cavaliers’ record match the hyperbole?
The Cavs’ performances match the hyperbole.
Christ Church enters the game at 5-1, with its only loss coming to Heathwood Hall.
In that game, the Cavs were their own worse enemy, turning the ball over seven
times.
Other than that hiccup, the Cavaliers have been a juggernaut, including a 52-0 victory last
week over
Southside Christian.
In that game, Robert Taylor caught touchdown passes from three different players. Taylor caught touchdown passes of 8, 14 and 40 yards from Hunter Townes, Graham Paylor and Robert DiBenedetto, respectively, as the Cavaliers took a 24-0 halftime lead.
Townes also threw touchdown passes of 14 and 15 yards to Hunter Sieber and Phillip Kilgore as Christ Church piled on four more touchdowns in the second half.
“They are just a very polished football team,” Moss said. “They throw the ball excellently.”
That’s because they have two quarterbacks who could start for almost any team, Moss said. In addition to having strong arms, both quarterbacks can tuck the ball and run.
The Cavaliers like to stretch the defense by throwing to the flats, putting pressure on the outside linebackers and corners.
“They are a quick-score team,” Moss said.
But don’t get the idea the Cavaliers just fling the ball. They are also adept at moving the ball on the ground with DiBenedetto doing most of the damage.
One way to combat the Cavs’ high-powered attack is to pressure the quarterback, Moss said.
But the Blacksburg coach also feels his defense must be strong up the middle, as well.
Both teams are nursing injuries. The Cavaliers are missing three starters, while the Wildcats are hurting at running back with Raymond Ellis and Lennal Dasher less than 100 percent.
While the Cavaliers are a dynamic offensive team, coach Don Frost said his team is still adjusting to a new defensive scheme installed a season ago.
William Bryan is the team’s top defensive back, while Tristan Rullo and David Dixon anchor the line.
“We have kind of fallen asleep on defense the last couple of games,” Frost said.
The Cavaliers must avoid the turnover problems that doomed them in their loss to Heathwood Hall, the Christ Church coach said.
Moss said the Wildcats will have a chance to pull the upset if they limit Christ Church’s big plays. It would also help the Wildcats’ cause to get some of its walking wounded healthy.
“We just want to get healthy so we are able to put our best players on the field,” the Blacksburg coach said.
