City council to discuss millage rate
Gaffney City Council meets today in a special called meeting, but the agenda isn’t as light as you would think.
Typically, council schedules a special called meeting to address a specific issue, but the council members will consider two topics today, including setting the new millage rate after this year’s countywide reassessment.
State law requires local governments to roll back their millage to avert a potential windfall from higher property appraisals. This time, the city will roll back its millage rate from 119.9 to 115 — a decrease of 4.9 mills.
Council passed first reading of the millage rate at its regularly scheduled meeting Oct. 5 but needed to act quickly to pass second reading to begin processing the 2009-2010 property tax notices. Those tax notices are expected to be in the mail later this month.
In addition to setting the new millage rate, council also will consider first reading of an ordinance to restore the manufacturing tax abatement.
The council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the city hall council chambers.
