Cavs’ dual threats wear out Blacksburg defense

Christ Church quarterbacks Hunter Townes and Graham Paylor were the ultimate dual threat Friday in a 41-21 win over Blacksburg.
Pinpoint passing from Townes helped the Cavaliers overcome four turnovers in the first half for a 24-13 lead. Paylor provided the running threat in the third quarter, scoring on runs of 64 and 5 yards to help spoil Blacksburg’s homecoming game.
Christ Church (6-1) needed all its offensive weapons along with fireworks in the return game from Robert DiBenedetto to fight off a determined Blacksburg football team.
DiBenedetto scooped up a muffed punt return and took it 77 yards for a touchdown with Christ Church clinging to a 14- 7 lead midway through the second quarter. DiBenedetto also had two fumbles, which helped keep Blacksburg within striking distance.

Blacksburg used trickery in the passing game on a scoring drive just before the half.
Hames caught a pass and then lateraled to Raymond Ellis, who advanced the ball to the 23-yard line.
After a double lateral pass to Bonner went for no gain, Blacksburg quarterback Treyvon Parker threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ryan Greene with 8 seconds left before halftime.
“I’m very proud of our kids effort tonight. We played as hard as we could play for 48 minutes,” Blacksburg head coach Mickey Moss said. “We have ninth grade cornerbacks and inside linebackers along with a lot of sophomores that are having to play both ways. Our kids just wore down after we played a real strong first half.”
Christ Church brought in Paylor to replace Townes in the third quarter.
Paylor scored on a 64- yard run for a 31-13 lead with 7:17 left in the third quarter.
Blacksburg was pinned back at the 3- yard line when Marquel Palmer got tackled near the goal line on the kickoff return.
DiBennedetto returned the kickoff to the 35-yard line. Paylor scored on a 5-yard scoring run two plays later.
Blacksburg scored late in the game when wide receiver Brent Bonner caught a 26- yard touchdown pass by Parker. Parker ran in the two point conversion run.
Blacksburg (1-6) will host Whitmire Friday in the final home game of the season. The Wildcats will end the season with road games against Landrum and Southside Christian.
