School trustees adopted a new policy Monday regarding public participation in meetings modeled after the one used in Barnwell School District 45.
Residents wishing to address the school board have been required in recent years to write a letter to the board chairman at least 48 hours in advance. Under the revised policy, local residents will now have until noon before Monday board meetings to request speaking time.
A time limit of three minutes is allowed for each person who is given permission to speak at the meetings.
Residents still have the option to request an audience before the board behind closed doors.
The new policy states the school board will not entertain comments involving personal attacks against school employees, pending student and employee discipline issues, or grievance matters.
School trustee Robin Duncan Harper requested the board review its policy on public participation in meetings, citing concerns over public access to the school board.
The school board’s Special Needs Committee recommended the new policy after reviewing similar public participation rules adopted by school districts in Marion, Pickens, Greenville and Barnwell.
Trustees unanimously approved a new form developed by the district administration. County residents will be asked to fill out the form to request time to address the school board during meetings.
The new public participation forms will be available from the school district office and the district’s Web site at:
