Burris, receivers on the same page
DeEdward Burris plans to get some rest this weekend.
The Gaffney junior quarterback had a season-best performance Friday, rushing for a team high 128 yards on just nine carries and two touchdowns. He also threw for 288 yards on only 10 completions and three touchdowns.
Burris was coming off a couple of tough starts against Byrnes and Spartanburg but he was poised and confident against York.
“It was an all-around good performance,” Burris said.
Burris said the offense is slowly but surely getting in sync for the region games. That means he’s feeling more comfortable with the wide receivers and the offensive line is providing him with more time to throw.
“We are all getting on the same page,” Burris said.
Burris explained that when he scrambles the wide receivers are now coming back for the ball instead of running away from him.
“It makes it easier on me,” he said.
Burris was on target Friday with touchdown passes of 37, 27 and 63 yards. The long Khris Brown touchdown reception came on a broken play.
Burris said he and the team spent time this week in film study, trying to correct their mistakes.
“The film room was big this week,” he said. “We saw the mistakes we were making and we cut down on those.”
Burris also complimented his line, which didn’t allow a sack against the Cougars after yielding seven against Spartanburg.
The Indians improve to 1-0 in the region with two winnable games against Nation Ford and Fort Mill looming before the showdown at Clover and season-ending contest against rival Northwestern.
Burris said it’s important the Indians round into midseason form during the next two games.
“We want to play our best the next few weeks so we don’t make any mistakes in the last two games,” he said.
