Former prep stars make impact on Saturday
Malcolm Long
Former Gaffney High standout Malcolm Long made it look easy on Saturday. Long completed 16 of his 23 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown in South Carolina State’s 37-10 victory over Norfolk State.
He also rushed for 22 yards on seven carries. For the season, Long has passed for 869 yards and five touchdowns.
His former Gaffney High teammate, Julius Wilkerson, has posted 35 tackles for the Bulldogs this season.
Some other former Gaffney also had standout performances for their college teams on Saturday.
J.B. Shippy had three tackles and two sacks in Georgia Southern’s loss to North Carolina. He also was credited with a couple of tackles for losses.
Tyson Petty and Nick Melton continue to make an impact for Gardner-Webb. Melton had four catches for 31 yards in the Bulldogs’ loss at Buffalo. For the season, he’s the team second-leading receiver with 15 catches for nearly 200 yards.
Petty had two catches for 18 yards for Gardner-Webb.
Bryce Smiley had three tackles, including two solos for the Presbyterian Blue Hose in their game against Old Dominion. He also had a fumble recovery. For the season, Smiley has been credited with 13 tackles.
