Church news

 The Rev. George Holland, pastor of New Pleasant Baptist Church and Professor of Church History at Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute, will speak Sunday, Oct. 18, at 6 p.m. at Cherokee Falls Baptist Church, 109 School St., Cherokee Falls. He will be sharing information about where the Baptist denomination began. A meal will be served in the recreation building on Batchelor Drive following the service. Members are asked to bring covered dishes and desserts.

 A celebration of Pastor Alice and Trustee Sammy Littlejohn's firstyear anniversary at Antioch Baptist Church, 300 Serene Drive, will be held Sunday, Oct. 18, at 3 p.m. The Rev. Ronald Frazier of Life Changers Church will be the speaker.

 Eastside Baptist Church, 1284 E. Cherokee St., Blacksburg, will host its third Saturday night singing Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. Guests will be The Lambert Family, Jimmy Holmes, Sounds of Faith and The Hamptons.

 The Senior Missionary presidents of the Thickety Mountain Baptist Association will meet at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church on Monday, Oct. 19, at 5 p.m. Each president is asked to wear something pink in awareness of Breast Cancer Month.

 White Plains Baptist Church will have a 142nd anniversary celebration Sunday, Oct. 25, at 4 p.m. The Rev. Raymond Wilkins of Hopewell Baptist Church, Newberry, will be the special guest. The Rev. James Patton Jr. is pastor.

Fun Day

 Gaffney Post 3447, located on the corner of Logan and Granard streets, will host a Family Fun Day on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, the event will feature a bounce house, dry slide, dunk tank, free games with prizes for the winners, a hula hoop contest, throw-the-football, threeleg races (one adult and one child), face painting and Bingo (2-4 p.m., pick a prize). Food will be available for a small fee (hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, soft drinks and cookies). Helpers will be VFW Post members, men's auxiliary, Gaffney High School ROTC and some members of the Beta Club.

Family reunion

 The Spencer family reunion will be held Sunday, Oct. 18, at 1 p.m. at Draytonville Baptist Church Family Life Center. Barbecue, hushpupies, slaw, baked beans and fries will be served. Those attending are asked to bring drinks and desserts.

Fund raisers

 The Broad River Leatherneck Detachment of the Marine Corps League will have a yard sale Saturday, Oct. 17, from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. at the old Cherokee Outfitters parking lot, 2326 Union Hwy. Proceeds will be used to support ongoing charities, such as the Wounded Warrior Program, Toys for Tots, scholarships and other programs.

 DMW Volunteer Fire Department will have a yard sale Saturday, Oct. 17, beginning at 7 a.m. Hot dogs will be sold beginning at 11 a.m. and an open house will be from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The station is located at 538 McKowns Mountain Road.

 First Baptist Church of Blacksburg will have a barbecue sale Friday, Oct. 16, during lunch, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and supper, 4- 7:30 p.m., in the Family Life Center. Dine in or carry out. Plates are $8 and include barbecue, bun, sauce, slaw, beans and chips. All proceeds will help youths attend summer camp.

 The Senior Centers of Cherokee County, 499 W. Rutledge Ave., will have a Christmas show on Friday, Nov. 6, from 5:30-9 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Vendors are wanted. Cost of a booth is $50 plus 10 percent donation of each day’s sales to the Senior Center. Admission to the show will be free.  The Senior Centers of Cherokee County will have a motorcycle run Saturday, Oct. 17. The "Run for the Seniors" will begin at the Gaffney center, travel to the Blacksburg center and then ride the route through Cherokee County. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. with the first bike out at 10 a.m. and the last bike out at noon. Registration fees are $20 for single and $30 for couple. Fees are tax deductible and include a free hot dog lunch.

 A yard sale and hot dog sale will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, beginning at 9 a.m. at Tabernacle of Love, located on Cherokee Falls Road in Blacksburg. There will lots of items for sale. Hot dog plates are $5 and include hot dogs, chips and slaw.

 The Senior Centers of Cherokee County, 499 W. Rutledge Ave., will have a yard sale Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Several vendors will also be on hand. New scrapbooking items will be for sale along with new jewelry items.
