Bad news: Weekend events rained out; Good news: No more drought
The Cherokee Historical and Preservation Society (CHAPS) had a good seven-year run of success with its annual antique and classic car show.
Not once in any of the preceding seven years did Mother Nature offer up anything less than sunny skies, according to CHAPS officials.
The eighth year of the event, however, seems to be jinxed.
For the fourth time in five weeks, the show was once again cancelled Saturday because of rain.
Several other outdoor events, including a Saturday car show at Kirby Memorial Baptist Church and a motorcycle benefit ride for the Senior Centers of Cherokee County, also were postponed. But at least both of those events represented a first try.
CHAPS will try a fifth time to hold its car show, this time on Oct. 24.
“It’s humorous at this point,” CHAPS museum director Billy Pennington said on Saturday as he was leaving the soggy museum grounds where the car show was to take place.
“We’re going to have this eventually,” he said. “Hopefully on the 24th.”
While there was no rain falling at the scheduled time of the show, heavy rains overnight had soaked the roadways and dampened the show grounds. The decision to cancel was made early enough that Pennington said the museum was able to call all of the participants who had pre-registered for the event.
Organizers were hopeful, too, that this was going to be one of the largest CHAPS car shows to date, as more people had pre-registered than in past years.
While the sun made almost no appearances last week, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources announced Friday that recent rainfall did have one positive effect. Cherokee County was removed from the “incipient drought” list on Friday and no longer has any concerns about low water supplies.
The motorcycle benefit ride for the Senior Centers of Cherokee County now will be held on Oct. 31. Registration will start at 9:30 a.m.
There was no immediate word about a new date for the Kirby Memorial car and motorcycle show.
