Building will be named in Dr. Griffin’s honor
DR. GRIFFIN
Limestone College will name its physical education building in honor of longtime college president Dr. Walt Griffin during a ceremony Friday.
A dedication ceremony is planned for 2 p.m to officially name the structure Walt Griffin Physical Education Center.
The public is invited to attend the outdoors event at the building, located on the corner of East O’Neal and Thompson streets.
The physical education center, the first new building on the campus in 30 years, was constructed in 2005 to serve as headquarters for the athletic training education program and as a practice area for the wrestling program.
The Limestone College Board of Trustees voted unanimously at its fall meeting to forever tie Griffin’s name to the building.
“As a board, we wanted to distinguish his tenure, which has been grounded in character and integrity and marked by thoughtful and insightful leadership,” said Lyman Hamrick, board of trustees chairman from 2005-2009. “Under President Griffin, Limestone has tripled its enrollment, balanced its budget for 17 successive years, doubled the size of its sports program, increased the number of terminally degreed faculty to an all-time high and successfully renovated 10 campus buildings.”
Griffin has been at Limestone College since 1992.
