Vehicle tax to be lower
The local option sales tax will result in savings for vehicle owners, too.
In an appearance before Cherokee County Council on Monday, Cherokee County Auditor Merv Bishop said car owners will begin seeing a savings on their property tax bills in January.
A chart presented by Bishop showed that the owner of a car valued at $5,000 would see a $3.36 savings in county property vehicle taxes. That figure jumps to $6.71 for an owner of a $10,000 vehicle.
An owner of a car valued at $20,000 would see a savings of $13.42. The savings climbs to $23.49 for the owner of a vehicle valued at $35,000.
Bishop said the county predicts the local option sales tax will generate about $3.7 million over a 12-month span. Of that total, $1.761,231 is earmarked for the county. Gaffney and Blacksburg also receive a portion of the sales tax.
Collections of the local option sales tax began in May.
