The Lady Saints volleyball team picked up two wins on Saturday afternoon at the Dig Pink Tournament hosted by Lander University.
Limestone beat Francis Marion and USC-Aiken and defeated both opponents in three sets. The Lady Saints stand at 14-14 overall.
Limestone swept Francis Marion by the scores of 27-25, 25-11, and 25-22. Melissa Thomas posted 16 kills, 10 digs, and 6 blocks. Chelsea Anthony had 10 kills and 10 digs. Danielle Seibert recorded 18 assists and 7 kills. Brooke England led the team with 18 digs while Sam Johnson had 5 blocks. Laura Kerrison had 19 assists and 10 digs.
The Lady Saints easily won the first two games of their match against USC-Aiken by the scores of 25-21 and 25-18. The Pacers fought back in the third game, but Limestone came away with the 27-25 victory. Anthony led the Lady Saints with 12 kills and 3 aces, while Thomas contributed 10 kills and 3 blocks. Seibert had 18 assists and 3 aces while Johnson chipped in 3 blocks. England had 18 digs while Jennifer O’Keeffe posted 7 kills. Holli Dawson had six kills and Courtney Taotoai recorded nine digs.
Limestone hosts Pfeiffer University on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Timken Center.
The Lady Saints will be holding their “Dig for the Cure” fundraiser that night and all money raised will go directly to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
The Lady Saints will be collecting donations at the door and are encouraging fans to wear pink to the game to “pink out” the gym. Pink Crocs and t-shirts will also be on sale. Those wishing to give money to the “Dig for the Cure” may pledge money on a per dig basis or make a flat donation.
Limestone’s Student- Athlete Advisory Committee will also be sponsoring a Halloween costume contest at the game next Thursday and prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. For more information, email Leah Goode at lgoode@ limestone.edu.
The Limestone College women’s cross country team finished third at the Conference Carolinas Championship on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Saints’ Courtney Rankin and Quanika Blackmon earned First-Team All- Conference honors with a fourth and five place finish, respectively. The meet was hosted by Queens University at McAlpine Creek Park.
Rankin’s time of 18:52 bested her own schoolrecord time by 22 seconds. Blackmon finished the course in 19:10. Lady Saint Molly Reichwald took 26th with her time of 20:56 as Jenny Altieri was 32nd (21:26). Alex Gadea finished 37th (21:42).
Queens University claimed the conference title while Lees-McRae was second. Anderson took fourth and Converse was fifth.
Anderson’s Whitney Bishoff won the individual title in the 5,000- meter run. Bishoff jumped out to a 30- meter lead then extended her lead even further to finish 28 seconds faster than the next racer, Jessica Neville.
The Limestone College men’s soccer team defeated Belmont Abbey 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas action.
The Saints climb to 10-4 overall and 7-2 in league play while the Crusaders stand at 8-6-1 overall and 3-6 in the league.
“We had a quality team effort today,” Limestone coach Eric Alsop said. “I’m extremely pleased with the way we rebounded from Thursday’s result. We had a team mentality from the start of the match to the finish to earn the win today. Now we’re going to get ready for our game against Pfeiffer.”
Limestone’s first goal came in the 51st minute when Keegan Ziada sent a pass across the field to Junior Ellis, who collected it just outside of the box, took two dribbles and connected on a low shot into the right corner of the net.
The Saints’ second goal came after a corner kick by Lee Smyth. After the ball was headed out of the box by an Abbey defender, Smyth took a shot that bounced off a Crusader player, resulting in an own goal that increased LC’s margin to 2-0.
Limestone held the decisive advantage on shots, 17-5, and recorded 10 corner kicks to the Abbey’s 0.
Saint goalkeeper Mark Davidson posted four saves while the Crusaders’ Brandon Alvarez had six.
The Limestone College field hockey team suffered a 1-0 overtime loss to Catawba College on Saturday. Limestone stands at 1-13 overall with today’s result as the Indians improve to 5-9.
Limestone held the offensive advantage as the Lady Saints outshot Catawba 13-8. Each team had four penalty corners.
The Indians’ Sam Santoli scored the gamewinning goal in the 71st minute on a breakaway.
Limestone’s Sara Parker and Aimee Rodriguez had three shots each.
Goalkeeper Kesli Zimmerman recorded 1 save in the opening period and Julie Medieros had 4 saves.
