Landrum outlasts Wildcats, 35-28
Blacksburg running back Raymond Ellis is tackled while helping the Wildcats on an 18-play scoring drive to open Friday's game against Landrum.
Landrum quarterback Brandon Cannon found Tyler Logan wide open for a 14-yard touchdown pass for the final score in a 35-28 win.
Landrum survived a late scare when their punter lost his footing and fell at the 16-yard line with 3:05 left in the game. Blacksburg quarterback Treyvon Parker was intercepted in the end zone two plays later when his pass was a couple seconds late to a wide receiver coming out of his break.
It was one of several golden opportunities Blacksburg let slip away in a key region game with Landrum. The Wildcats surrendered two leads in the game, including a 14-0 first quarter lead.
“We played well in the first half. We turned it over in the second quarter when we had a chance to go up by three scores. They scooped it up and had a long return to set up a touchdown,” Blacksburg coach Mickey Moss said. “We gave up too many big plays. Some of it is due to youth and not having enough speed. I’m proud of our effort. We just need to get better.”
Blacksburg opened the game with a 19-play touchdown drive which took nearly 10 minutes off the clock. Running backs Chase Hames, Raymond Ellis, Lennal Dasher and Bradley Phillips all accounted for yardage on the drive. It finally ended on a 1-yard plunge by Phillips into the end zone.
When Landrum finally got the ball, wide receiver David Hefner fumbled the ball following a catch at the 35-yard line. Ellis returned the fumble for a touchdown for a 14-0 Blacksburg lead. A turning point occurred on
Blacksburg’s next possession in the second quarter when Chase Hames fumbled at the 28-yard line to end a long drive. Landrum’s Austin Brown picked up the fumble and returned it 48 yards to set up a 4- yard scoring run by Cannon.
After forcing a punt, Landrum scored again on a 11-yard run by Tyler Burrell to pull within 14-13 at halftime.
Blacksburg surprised Landrum with an onside kick on the opening second half kickoff. Parker scored on a 1- yard run to extend Blacksburg’s lead to 21- 13.
Landrum tied the game twenty seconds later on a 32-yard run by Burrell.
Blacksburg was unable to turn two fumble recoveries into points in the second half.
Landrum took the lead when Logan caught a 81-yard touchdown pass from Cannon early in the fourth quarter.
Blacksburg was able to tie the game at 28 on a long touchdown pass of their own.
Parker connected with Chase Hames on a 56-yard score.
Landrum had the final answer when Cannon connected with Logan for a second time for the game-winning score. Blacksburg travels to Southside Christian Friday for their last regular season game.
