Council will be updated on industrial recruiting

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Staff Writer larry@gaffneyledger.com

Economic development is expected to be the hot topic at today’s Cherokee County Council meeting.

Cherokee County Development Board Executive Director Jim Cook is scheduled to update council on several projects, according to the agenda.

Cook was unable to be reached for comment. But sources have said that the county is close to landing an unidentified company, which would locate in an existing manufacturing building and would hire approximately 50 workers.

The company is expected to seek a fee-in-lieu agreement from the county at a future council meeting.

That news would come on the heels of the announcement last month that Jetline plans to hire 100 workers to operate its Hyatt Street plant as well as the news that Shelby, N.C.-based Nu-Vu Communications has been selected to receive more than $32 million in federal stimulus money to offer high-speed Internet, telephone and television services over fiber optic lines here. That $32 million investment could result in the creation of 60 jobs.
