Lady Saints upset Pfeiffer
Limestone College's Bekki Hagarman led the No. 7-seeded Lady Saints to a 1-0 upset over second-seeded Pfeiffer with her goal in the 42nd minute in the first round of the Conference Carolinas women's soccer tournament on Monday.
After battling for most of the first half, Lady Saint Vanessa Jarrett sent a long pass down the right side of the field that was picked up by Madi Dulisse, who was inside the box, found Hagarman with a cross for the 1- 0 lead with only minutes left to play in the period.
Goalkeeper Brittany Clark posted seven saves to ensure the shutout for Limestone. Pfeiffer's Suzie Hinman posted three saves.
The Falcons outshot Limestone 22-5. Pfeiffer also had the 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Benson named player of week
Limestone College's Ali Benson (Hull, England) was named Conference Carolinas men's soccer Player of the Week on Tuesday, as released by the conference office.
Benson recorded 13 points last week, leading the Saints to victories over Pfeiffer and Chowan.
Benson recorded a pair of hat tricks against the Falcons and Hawks. Benson tallied three goals in the Saints' 5-4 conference win over Pfeiffer on Wednesday to help Limestone claim a program-high secondplace finish in the league regular season standings
He scored three more goals and tallied an assist in the Saints' 9-0 shutout against Chowan on Saturday.
Benson leads Limestone with 5 game-winning goals this season, 33 points, and 15 goals.
Gaffney's Steagall goes to state
Gaffney's Austin Steagall finished fifth at the Upper State 4A Cross Country Qualifier at Dorman High School this past Saturday.
His performance earned him an entry to the South Carolina 4A State Championship race this Saturday at the Sandhills Research Center in Columbia.
This is the second year in a row that Austin has qualified for the State Championships. Last year he earned All-State Honors with an 8th place finish.
Anthony earns weekly award
Limestone College's Chelsea Anthony (Pickens, S.C.) was named Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Player of Week, as released by the league office on Tuesday.
She led the Lady Saints to two important conference victories last week, posting a double-double in each match.
Anthony played a key role in Limestone's three-game wins over Pfeiffer and Queens.
In Limestone's annual “Dig for the Cure” fundraiser match against the Falcons, Anthony led all defenders with 20 digs, led all attackers with 12 kills and had a match-high 4 aces.
In the Senior Day match versus Queens, Anthony posted similar stats with 11 kills, 10 digs, and 3 aces. Anthony is the Limestone career leader in digs and aces.
