Indians in points race for playoffs
Photo byLARRY HILLIARD Gaffney quarterback DeEdward Burris looks for an open receiver during firsthalf action against Clover on Friday. Burris completed 17 of his 27 passes.
You might want to keep your eraser handy, but it appears Gaffney will open the playoffs at home against Blythewood.
A win over Northwestern on Friday and a victory by Union over Chapin, would likely give the Indians 36 points and either a sixth or seventh seed in the Class 4A Division I playoffs.
Byrnes has locked up the No. 1 overall seed, while Summerville would be the No. 2 overall seed but top seed in the lower bracket.
It appears Gaffney and Dorman would be placed in Summerville’s bracket.
But Gaffney coach Phil Strickland said nothing will be finalized until Friday’s games are completed.
“So much stuff can still change,” he said.
One thing is for certain the winner of Friday’s game between the Trojans and Indians will capture the Region III-4A crown and earn a higher seed.
Strickland said he wants his team to match the intensity it showed against Clover.
“I thought it was our best effort,” he said. “We had gang tackling and everybody played with more effort. We have to play that way again.”
Strickland praised quarterback DeEdward Burris, who completed 19 of his 27 passes for 268 yards, for being patient in the pocket and scrambling only as a last resort.
“He did a great job. I always said when the light turned on and he’d learn when to run it he’d be a total quarterback,” the Gaffney coach said.
All fans are encouraged to wear black to the game Friday in support of the Indians.
“It’s a very big game and we want all the support we can get,” he said.
