Limestone advances with shutout of Mt. Olive
The No. 2-seeded Limestone College Saints advanced to the semifinals of the Conference Carolinas men’s soccer tournament with a 3-0 shutout over No. 7 Mount Olive in the first round of postseason competition on Tuesday at Saints Field.
Limestone’s record moves to 13-4 overall as the Trojans see their season end with a 6-10-1 record.
The Saints dominated the game from the start, outshooting Mount Olive 12-0 in the first half.
Limestone notched the first goal of the contest in the 13th minute after a corner kick.
Tom Morris took the initial shot that hit the post, but Liam Garner collected the rebound to put Limestone up 1-0.
Garner scored again about 10 minutes later as Stuart Wright was credited with the assist. Limestone headed into halftime with the 2-0 lead.
Limestone’s third goal came at the 71:41 mark. Mike Stephenson had the ball on the right flank and passed it ahead to Keegan Ziada, who shot the ball past the Trojan goalkeeper for his eighth goal of the season.
Saint goalkeeper Mark Davidson recorded his eighth shutout with three saves.
Mount Olive’s Jamie Carano made seven saves in the first 82 minutes of the game.
