The Gaffney Police Department re-opened the investigation of an Oct. 17 car crash after a local man died in a hospital.

Conrad Barnhill, 78, of Wilkinsville Highway, was injured when his vehicle was struck in the side at the intersection of West Floyd Baker Boulevard and Banking Way. He died Nov. 3 from injuries suffered in the wreck, Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler ruled.

“We are looking at it again,” Gaffney Police Chief Rick Turner said on Thursday.

While the other driver was faulted in the initial accident report for running a red light, no ticket has been issued.

Barnhill was driving a 1992 Chevrolet truck on Banking Way, directly across from the Walmart shopping center, and was attempting to cross West Floyd Baker Boulevard when his vehicle was struck by a westbound Jeep driven by Olivia Christine Walker, 27, of Ashworth School Road, according to the initial Gaffney Police Department accident report.

Officer Steve Green, who investigated the wreck, wrote that Walker’s vehicle disregarded a red light when the collision occurred. A witness listed in the accident report is an officer with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department.

Barnhill, whose obituary can be found on Page 8A, underwent surgery in Charlotte after the crash and was in rehabilitation at Mary Black Memorial Hospital in Spartanburg when he died, according to Fowler.

Fowler said Thursday an investigation showed Barnhill died from injuries suffered in the car crash and that the death would be considered a traffic fatality. The manner of the death was ruled accidental, Fowler said.

Walker and an 8-year-old passenger in her vehicle were listed in the initial accident report as having possible injuries, though neither was listed as having been transported to a medical facility.
