Belmont Abbey bounces Saints in semis

Belmont Abbey’s Emmanual Yamson’s unassisted goal at the 62:52 mark lifted the No. 6-seeded Crusaders to a 1-0 victory at No.2-seed Limestone in the semifinals of the Conference Carolina’s men’s soccer tournament.

The result marked the third consecutive season that the Crusaders eliminated Limestone from the tourney at Saints Field.

Limestone (13-5) came up short despite a 21-7 advantage in shots. The Saints outshot the Abbey 12- 1 in the opening half, yet the contest was scoreless at intermission.

Belmont Abbey (12-7-1) goalkeeper Brandon Alvarez turned away five Saints shots in the second half and nine for the match.

Limestone keeper Mark Davidson made three saves on the afternoon, all in the second half.

Limestone now will await word on a berth in the 2009 NCAA Division II men’s national tournament field.

In related news, six Limestone College men’s soccer players were named to the Conference Carolinas All-League team, as released by the conference office on Thursday.

Ali Benson and Dominic Casicato earned First-Team honors, while Keegan Ziada and Lee Smyth were named Second-Team All-Conference.

Junior Ellis and James Burke represented the Saints on the Third Team.

Benson leads Limestone with 33 points and 15 goals. He has started in all 17 games for the Saints. Benson scored the gamewinning goals against USC-Aiken, Queens, Mount Olive, Barton, and Chowan. He also posted two hat tricks in 2009.

As a defender and team captain, Casciato anchors the Saints’ defense that posts eight shutouts and a 1.04 goals against average. He made 15 starts in 15 games played this season. Casciato also picked up an assist against Erskine on September 30.

Ziada has played in all 17 contests with 15 starts. He has recorded 23 points from 8 goals and 7 assists this season.

Smyth leads the team with eight assists.
