County to assess equipment

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Staff Writer larry@gaffneyledger.com

It’s a decision faced by consumers every day: spend money to repair that old piece of equipment or buy new.

Cherokee County Council will be making the very same decision at today’s 4 p.m. work session when it takes stock of its aging capital equipment.

Cherokee County Assistant Administrator Holland Belue said the goal of the work session is to develop a 5-year plan to address the county’s capital equipment needs.

“We’ll be deciding if repairs outweigh the cost of ownership,” Belue said. “Anything that we feel needs to be replaced within five years will be discussed.”

Belue said the work session will be similar to the one held last year when council decided to update its aging sanitation fleet by purchasing six new garbage trucks.

In particular, council must decide at today’s work session if it’s financially wise to repair two earth movers at the county landfill or buy or lease newer models.

“We’ll take a look at our options,” Belue said.
