By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

Mark Huff Mark Huff You’d think after 13 years that Gaffney boys’ basketball coach Mark Huff would be through with firsts.

But this season marks the first time that Huff began practice with all five projected starters on the floor. In years’ past, Huff needed to wait until the football season ended before filling out his starting lineup.

“The five kids who have played were on the floor for practice,” Huff said.

Those projected starters include reigning Class 4A Player of the Year Josh Corry, Chase Smith, Bo Wray, Dominique Byers and Dershawn Dawkins.

“I hope the guys are getting a lot of reps,” the Gaffney coach said.

Huff said he’s spent the first few days of practice installing and reviewing the team’s offense and defense.

“A lot of it is review since a lot of the players went with us over the summer,” he said.

The Indians had their first scrimmage Tuesday against Southside. The results weren’t available at presstime.

The Indians return to the court Thursday in a scrimmage with Hillcrest at 6 p.m. before traveling to Berea for a scrimmage on Tuesday, Nov. 17. The Indians’ will have their final scrimmage on Saturday, Nov. 21.

Huff said the scrimmages should expose the team’s strengths and weaknesses.

“We are playing really good teams,” he said. “Southside is the defending state champion and Greer has everybody back.”
