Children’s home, Iron City Ministries hosting fundraising events Saturday

Knowing it “takes a little to get a little,” two local nonprofit organizations are hosting events in an effort to further serve Cherokee County residents.

Beginning its campaign to raise $75,000 to match a grant given to the group from the Timken Foundation, the Cherokee Children’s Home will host a “Giant Yard & Bake Sale” this Saturday at the First Baptist Church Life Center from 7-11 a.m.

The yard sale will feature furniture, clothing, kitchen utensils, Christmas items and more.

Meanwhile, items available for purchase at the bake sale will come from the kitchens of some of Gaffney’s best cooks, according to children’s home Director of Development Judy Nix.

“This will be a wonderful time to purchase baked goods from some of the best cooks in Gaffney — just in time for your Thanksgiving meal,” Nix said in a prepared statement. “We are working hard to raise money to meet the Timken Foundation’s $75,000 challenge grant.”

For the past two decades, the private, nonprofit group has served as an emergency shelter for youths up to 17 years of age, receiving support from area restaurants, churches, civic organizations and individuals.

Timken is the latest to help the local organization, donating funds to assist the children’s home in its construction of a new bedroom wing that will serve children who have suffered sexual abuse or exhibit behavior not allowing them to be placed in close contact with their peers.

“Serving these children has resulted in the past in us not being able to operate at full capacity,” said Nix in a previous statement following Timken’s announcement. “Upon completion of the wing we will be able to provide these children the privacy they need while providing a safe refuge to the other children in the home.”

This weekend is also quite important for Iron City Ministries, which will be hosting its 7th annual auction Saturday at Blacksburg Middle School.

Festivities get under way at 2 p.m. with a silent auction, as well as yard, baked goods and hot dog sales. A live auction will begin at 5 p.m. with WSPA-Channel 7 meteorologist Jack Roper serving as the celebrity auctioneer.

Among the items available at the auction are a diamond tennis bracelet, an American Kennel Club (AKC) certified beagle puppy, tickets to Dollywood, tools, restaurant certificates and paintings by local artists.

Donations for the event are still being accepted. All funds go toward the ministry’s mission of assisting local clients who are struggling with bills, food and clothing.
