Meeting

 The Cherokee County Republican Party will meet today at 6:30 p.m at Aegean Pizza on Floyd Baker Boulevard. Special guests include Florence County Councilman Ken Ard, who is a candidate for SC Lt. Governor, and Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler.

Church news

 Limestone Presbyterian Church invites you to a Service of Prayer and Thanksgiving on Wednesday, Nov 25, from 6-6:30 p.m. in the chapel.

Christmas parades

 The Cowpens Christmas Parade is set for Saturday, Nov. 28, at 10 a.m. A lighting of the town’s Christmas tree will be held that evening at 6:30.

 The Blacksburg Christmas Parade is scheduled Saturday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m. There is no entrance fee. Floats can be rented for $365 and should be ordered no later than Dec. 3. All other entrants are asked to register by Dec. 10. Contact Debby or Laura at Blacksburg Town Hall, 864-839-2332, if you wish to participate or for more information.

Volunteers

needed

 The IRS and its partners are looking for volunteers to spend a little time learning about taxes and sharing that knowledge with others to help prepare their federal and state tax returns. Volunteer Income Tax assistance (VITA) Program volunteers prepare free basic federal and state tax returns (filed electronically) for taxpayers whose incomes are $49,000 or less. Anyone can volunteer. The IRS provides free training materials to community organizations that sponsor VITA. Training classes generally start in December or January and will be held locally at a convenient location. Volunteers generally spend three to four hours a week from the latter part of January through April 15 helping taxpayers the community. The Senior Center in Gaffney will be a host for the training. Candy-making

class

 A hands-on holiday candy making class will be held Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. until noon at the Gaffney Senior Center, 499 W. Rutledge Ave. The class will cover melting, molding, coloring, marblizing, hand dipping and candy cluster. Cost is $25; all supplies are included. Bring a container to take your finished treats home. Church news

 The Senior Missionaries of the Thickety Mountain Baptist Association will have its fifth Sunday program Nov. 29 at 2:30 p.m. at the Associational Building with Bethel, Mr. Sinai, Youngs Grove and Limestone in charge. All churches are urged to attend. The church with the highest attendance will receive the Attendance Cup from last quarter's winner, Shady Grove.

 The Cherokee County Solid Waste Collection, Recycling and Landfill departments will be closed Thursday, Nov. 26, and Friday, Nov. 27, in observance of Thanksgiving. You may use extra containers for overflow on Thursday, Dec. 3, and Friday, Dec. 4, for garbage and recycling. The Recycling Center receiving bay will be open Saturday, Nov. 28, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. The landfill will be open Saturday, Nov. 28, from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. All departments will resume normal operations Nov. 30.

 Iron City Ministries will be closed Nov. 25-27 for Thanksgiving and reopen Monday, Nov. 30. Normal operations hours are 9 a.m.-noon, Monday through Thursday.

Support groups

 AA meetings are held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m. and Wednesday and Saturday at noon in the building behind Limestone Street United Methodist Church on Carlisle Street. If you have a problem with alcohol, you are welcome to attend.

 Narcotics Anonymous meetings are held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. For information call 1-800-828-5689.
