FOREVER ETCHED IN STONE
Quietly, a new name was added recently to the Cherokee County Veterans Memorial outside the county administration building on North Limestone Street. There had never been any doubt Lance Cpl. Christopher Fowlkes' name would be remembered in Cherokee County and listed among the ranks who made the ultimate sacrifice. The stone carver simply needed the right weather conditions to perform the task, one local veterans official had said. Fowlkes, who was the first wartime casualty from Gaffney since the Vietnam War, died Sept. 10 from injuries he suffered Sept. 3 when a roadside bomb exploded in the Helmand province of Afghanistan. Fowlkes, a 2007 graduate of Gaffney High School, was serving his second overseas deployment, having previously served in Iraq.
