Woman accused of spitting blood on corrections officer
The Gaffney Police Department on Nov. 23 served two arrest warrants on a 61-year-old Buck Shoals Road woman accused of spitting blood on a corrections officer and a paramedic during a Sept. 19 incident at the Cherokee County Detention Center.
Betty Ann Cochran was charged with two separate counts of throwing bodily fluids.
According to a police report, a city officer responded Sept. 19 at about 1 a.m. to an incident on East Birnie Street that he said turned out to be a civil matter. While speaking with Cochran, the officer alleged she became irate and started cursing. Cochran was placed under arrest, according to the report, and taken to the county jail.
Police said Cochran would not get out of the vehicle when they arrived and a female detention officer was called to assist.
Two detention officers subsequently got Cochran out of the police vehicle but the arresting officer alleged in a report that she began resisting once they reached the rear of the car and the two detention officers took her down to the ground.
Police said Cochran’s face hit the ground during the incident and she busted her nose. Police said a detention center officer also was injured and an ambulance was called to the scene.
While waiting for medical help, police claimed Cochran spit blood on a detention center officer who was holding a towel on her nose. Police claimed Cochran subsequently spit blood on a paramedic who arrived at the scene.
Cochran was taken to Upstate Carolina Medical Center for treatment and then back to the jail.
There was no immediate word on the results of a bond hearing as of Tuesday afternoon.
A 24-year-old Cherokee Ridge Drive man allegedly crashed a vehicle while trying to flee from police Nov. 22.
According to a report at the Gaffney Police Department, officers were conducting a public safety checkpoint on Providence Road and 3rd Street at about 1:10 a.m. when Allen Michael Wilson, 24, allegedly pulled up in a green Dodge truck and handed his identification to an officer. Police said Wilson then took off and ran from pursuing officers, who had activated their blue lights and sirens.
Police said they continued to pursue Wilson until he wrecked on Highway 11 near Mill Gin Road.
Police said they detected an odor of alcohol on Wilson and subsequently arrested him on a charge of driving under the influence. A breath test conducted at the Cherokee County Detention Center allegedly showed Wilson had a blood alcohol level of .17 percent, which is more than twice the legal limit in South Carolina.
