Wildcats struggle in season-opening game with Chapman

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

Typically, coaches can’t pinpoint one play as the determining factor in a game.

But the Blacksburg varsity boys’ season-opening 88-51 loss to Chapman in the Bulldog/Panther Clash on Monday was anything but typical.

The Wildcats trailed 13-7 in the first quarter and were still in the game, but Chapman swished a 3-pointer at the buzzer to go up 16-7.

“We came out flat and had first-game jitters,” Blacksburg coach Travis Miller said. “We were making mistake after mistake. The 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter was a back breaker. It just killed us.”

The Wildcats were outscored 23-11 in the second quarter.

Darrell Walton was the Wildcats’ top scorer with 10 points.

Jaylen Nesbitt had 26 points to lead the Panthers, who hit seven treys.

Blacksburg was scheduled to play Brashier Middle College Charter on Tuesday, but the results weren’t known at presstime.

The Wildcats will play Boiling Springs today at 1:15 p.m.
