A 41-year-old Gaffney man found shot inside a Sarratt Street home early Saturday morning died Sunday afternoon at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Calvin Todd Morgan, of 125 Indiana Circle, died at 12:30 p.m., Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler confirmed.

The Gaffney Police Department arrested 50-yearold Tony Chambers Hayword, also known as “New York,” of Broad Street, early Saturday and charged him with assault and battery with intent to kill.

Gaffney Police Department Captain of Detectives Chris Skinner confirmed Sunday afternoon that the charge would be upgraded to murder, most likely by today. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still being investigated, Skinner said.

According to a police report at the Gaffney Police Department, a man who lived at 311 Sarratt St., where the shooting took place, said Hayword and two females were with the victim inside a room when, at about 3:15 a.m., he heard some noises and then a “soft pop.”

The resident of the home said Hayword and the two women then ran out of the room and nearly knocked him over while leaving the home. The two women left on foot while Hayword left in a Volvotype wagon.

When police arrived at the scene, they were told Morgan had been shot. They found Morgan lying on the floor in front of a couch.

Police said Morgan had blood around his head.

Police reported that they immediately summoned medical help and Gaffney firefighters arrived at the scene by 3:23 a.m. Paramedics from Upstate Carolina Medical Center arrived just a minute later.

Morgan subsequently was taken to the parking lot of the Ingle’s supermarket on 3rd Street, from where he was flown by the Regional One helicopter to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Det. Sgt. Tommy Kennedy responded to the scene to process it for evidence. He collected a shell casing from a .380-caliber bullet, according to the police report.

Police said Det. Brian Blanton subsequently received information that Hayword could be found at a Broad Street home and two officers were dispatched to that location.

Police reported that Hayword came to the door when they arrived at the Broad Street home and confirmed that he was known as “New York.” He allegedly told the officers, “I’m the one you’re looking for,” according to the police report, and then asked police if they wanted the gun.

Police said Hayword then told them the gun was located in the bedroom of the Broad Street home on a mantle. Police said they recovered the gun in a white plastic bag.

Police said Hayword then told them the location of his vehicle, which was in the 600 block of West Rutledge Street. The vehicle was located and towed to the city’s vehicle maintenance shop and secured.

Hayword requested a lawyer while being interviewed at the city police department, according to the police report.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday in Newberry.
