Couple escapes house fire unharmed
Two people escaped injury Saturday morning when fire broke out in the bedroom of this Granite Drive home. Firefighters said it appeared the fire originated from a space heater in the bedroom.
A couple was awakened from their sleep Saturday morning by a fire in their bedroom.
Luckily, City of Gaffney firefighters said the couple was able to escape from the burning home unharmed.
Fire broke out at 121 Granite Drive at about 8 a.m. Saturday.
Capt. Jody Brassington of the Gaffney Fire Department said flames were coming out the bedroom window when firefighters arrived.
“They woke up and found fire along the foot of their bed and along one wall,” he said of the couple.
Fire was contained to the bedroom of the single story brick home. Firefighters were able to declare the fire under control within six minutes of their arrival, Brassington said. However, smoke caused damage throughout the home.
Brassington said it appeared the fire originated from a space heater in the bedroom of the home, which was undergoing renovations.
There was no smoke detector in the home.
“This couple was very lucky to have woken up in time to escape the fire that was burning in the room where they were sleeping,” said Gaffney Fire Chief Nathan Ellis. “I think they’re very lucky to have been able to escape.”
All three City of Gaffney fire stations responded to the scene, along with paramedics from Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
