Murder warrant issued

As expected, Gaffney Police Department investigators served a 50-year-old city man with a new arrest warrant Monday in the wake of a 41- year-old man’s death.

Hayword Tony Chambers, 50, of Broad Street, also known as “New York,” initially was charged with assault and battery with intent to kill following an early morning shooting incident on Sarratt Street. But police upgraded the charge to murder following the Sunday afternoon death of Calvin Todd Morgan, 41, of Indiana Circle.

Chambers’ first, last and middle name were listed in the wrong order on the initial police report of the shooting and he was incorrectly identified in Monday’s edition of The Gaffney Ledger as Tony Chambers Hayword.

Police still were investigating the shooting on Tuesday and there was no word yet on what exactly transpired.

The shooting occurred at about 3:15 a.m. Saturday inside a home at 311 Sarratt St. Chambers, Morgan and two women were inside a room at the home when some type of argument broke out.

Chambers allegedly pulled out a gun and the two women allegedly fled the room, according to police. A witness heard a “soft pop” and Chambers allegedly fled the home.

Police found Morgan lying on the floor with blood around his head. He was flown by helicopter to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where he died early Sunday afternoon.

Det. Sgt. Brian Blanton of the Gaffney Police Department said Tuesday that police did not yet know what the two men were arguing about. He said interviews with witnesses were ongoing.

After the shooting, police found Chambers at his Broad Street home and he allegedly told them, “I’m the one you’re looking for.”

Police said Chambers further directed them to the pistol.
