Chesnee’s Dejohn Rowland and Raheem Hughes both hit 3-pointers, but Blacksburg’s Dante Brown had the most dramatic basket.
Brown’s 3-pointer with :05 remaining broke a tie and gave the Wildcats a big 71-68 victory over the rival Eagles.
It also snapped a 6- game losing streak to Chesnee.
“This was a huge win for us,” Blacksburg coach Travis Miller said. “It was a great team win. The kids have worked real hard and it was good to get something out of it.”
The Wildcats had possession in the game’s final minute but turned it over. With :12 remaining, Blacksburg’s Darrell Walton blocked a Chesnee shot, passed to Ty Davis, who found Brown open for the game-winner.
The game was tight throughout.
The Eagles led 22-16 at the end of the first quarter. But the Wildcats went on a run to tie it at 35 at halftime.
The Eagles regained a four-point lead after three quarters.
Walton paced the Wildcats with 18 points. Jordan Black added 13 points while J.J. Lattimore and Kaleb Earls each had 11 points for the Wildcats, who improve to 2-2.
Rowland was the game’s high scorer with 32 points, including five 3-pointers.
“This was really a good game to watch,” the Blacksburg coach said.
The Wildcats return to action Thursday at Spartanburg Christian and will host Woodruff on Friday.
