Gaffney looking for opponent
With the surprise addition of Boiling Springs to the Region III as part of the latest realignment, Gaffney coach Phil Strickland is looking for another nonregion opponent.
Strickland said he was planning to open with the Bulldogs in week zero next year. But now the Bulldogs will be part of the Indians’ challenging region schedule, along with Rock Hill, Northwestern, Clover and Spartanburg.
Strickland said he most locate an opponent to fill either the week zero or six slots on the schedule. And that team might come from North Carolina.
“It’s a possibility,” Strickland said.
The other nonregion opponents are etched in stone - and, once again, there are no softies.
With Boiling Springs out in week zero, that likely means the Indians will kickoff the season at home against the rival Dorman Cavaliers, the team that eliminated the Indians from the playoffs.
The always formidable Greenwood Eagles are next on the schedule.
The Eagles will be followed by Union County, a surprise of the Class 3A playoffs.
Byrnes, which is going for their 10th state title in Columbia on Saturday, and Greenville round out the nonregion scheduled.
