Photo by LARRY HILLIARD The second-ranked Gaffney Indians led thirdranked Dorman by six points at halftime. So that wasn’t an issue. So, why was Gaffney coach Mark Huff miffed?

The Cavaliers had 10 offensive rebounds in the first half, but the Indians did enough other things to come away with a big 66-60 road win.

“The effort was good and the kids played hard,” Huff said. “But we gave up too many offensive rebounds.”

Huff also was angered by the Indians’ sloppy ballhandling when the Cavaliers went to a halfcourt trap late in the game.

“We need to do a better job executing down the stretch,” he said.

The Cavs’ defensive change helped fuel a run that cut a 14-point deficit to 60-55 on a Derrick Scott putback with 1:25 left in the game.

But the Indians regrouped as Bo Wray hit two free throws, and Quinshad Davis scored on a layup after Josh Corry rebounded Dershawn Dawkins’ missed free throw to put the Indians up 65-55.

Dorman’s Adam Humphries hit a 3-pointer to close the margin to 65-60 with :23.5 remaining, but Corry made a free throw seconds later and the Cavaliers wouldn’t draw any closer.

Corry had 30 points and Chase Smith added 12 to lead the Indians, who improve to 3-0. Scott, who only averaged five points a game as a junior last season, had 26 to pace the Cavaliers.

Both teams struggled shooting the ball. Gaffney shot just 35 percent from the field, while Dorman fared only slightly better at 39 percent.

Gaffney enjoyed a huge edge at the free throw line, where they made 23 of 36. The Cavs, on the other hand, went to the foul line only 15 times.

Corry, the reigning Class 4A player of the year, was especially big in the third quarter when he made three free throws after being fouled behind the line and made a 3-pointer on the Indians’ next possession to open up a 50-37 lead.

The lead grew to 15 on L.J. Peake’s basket.

Gaffney had a 33-27 lead at the break and led by five after a low-scoring first quarter.

Gaffney will host Byrnes today.
