Trojans outlast Limestone
Limestone's Stewart Clark passes to a teammate during first-half action Saturday against Mount Olive.
The Limestone men’s basketball team saw far too much of Mount Olive’s Kendrick Easley and Lamonte Theus on Saturday.
Easley scored a game-high 27 points and Theus added 22 to lead the Trojans to an 83-74 win at Limestone.
Easley and Theus combined for nine of the Trojans’ 10 3-pointers.
Fittingly, Easley hit a 3-pointer and a basket to put the Trojans up 46-41 at the half.
The Saints went on a run midway through the second half to grab a 64-61 lead on Danny Friend’s basket. But Mount Olive responded with a 6-0 spurt to take the lead for good.
The Trojans led by as many as ninepoints before back-to-back baskets by Tyron Evans and Anthony Middleton cut the deficit to 79-74 with :43.9 left to play.
But Mount Olive hit its free throws down the stretch to ice the win.
Free throws were another deciding factor in the game. The Trojans were 13 for 16, while the Saints hit just 11 of their 24 foul shots.
The Trojans now stand at 2-0 in the conference and 4-1 overall, while Limestone falls to 1-1 in the league and 5-2 overall.
Limestone placed three players in double figures. The Saints were led by Friend’s 18 points, while Jarrell Douglass added 13 points and 6 rebounds. Evans contributed 12 points for the Saints, who travel to Mars Hill on Dec. 18.
