Gaffney police serve warrants in armed robberies investigation
Gaffney Police Department investigators on Tuesday served arrest warrants against a 23-year-old city man for his alleged involvement in two recent armed robberies.
Elex Sentell Dowdle, whose address is listed as 409 East Jr. High Road, is charged with the Dec. 24 armed robbery of the Corner Stop #5 convenience store on North Logan Street, and also the Dec. 26 armed robbery of Eastside Save Way convenience store on Wilkinsville Highway.
Police had been looking for Dowdle since last week.
Previously charged in connection with the same two incidents is 22-year-old Nigel Phillips, whose address is listed as 4th Street, Gaffney.
Phillips was initially served with a warrant Jan. 5 for the Eastside Save Way robbery. On Jan. 7, the Gaffney Police Department served Phillips with an arrest warrant for the Corner Stop #5 robbery.
According to previously released incident reports, two men entered the Eastside Save Way on Dec. 26 at about 6:45 p.m., both of them allegedly armed with silver-colored handguns. Police reported that one of the robbers leaned over the store’s counter and pointed his gun at a clerk’s chest and said, “Give me everything.”
The robber then also demanded five packs of Newport cigarettes.
Police said the robbers subsequently fled toward Stephenson and Sparks streets with an undetermined amount of cash and five packs of cigarettes.
On Dec. 24, according to a separate report, two men entered the Corner Stop #5 at about 9:15 p.m. The taller of the two men walked up to the register, pulled out a gun and told a store employee to give him money. The armed robber left the store with about $1,000 in cash. The second unknown man allegedly acted as a lookout during the incident.
Detective J.S. Blackwell of the Gaffney Police Department investigated the robberies.
